No joke, we thought this crab was dead. Boy were we wrong! Here's the story.
Recently Brian and I acquired a 30-gallon fish tank from Brian's brother, Tim, which we filled with 6 orange platies (now 7 because they reproduced), 3 silver red-eyed tetras, a dalmatian molly, and a fiddler crab. All were living harmoniously until the crab, whom we affectionately call Hermie, started to climb the hoses in the tank and hang out by the filter at the top. Even with constant discouragement from us (we kept pushing it back to the bottom), Hermie wouldn't leave the top of the tank alone and I was afraid that one day it would try to get out, since the top of the tank is open.
While Brian was away in California, helping his parents with their house, Hermie disappeared completely. I woke up one morning and he was no longer in the tank and it freaked me out! I didn't want to think of it crawling around our apartment with its pinchers. But since it's so hot in our apartment, we just figured he would start to stink somewhere.
Two weeks later, today, Brian decided to clean out the tank filter. Guess what jumped out to meet him in all its creepiness: HERMIE!!! We were shocked that it survived that long being crammed into the filter. But somehow it lives.
I wasn't very happy to see it again. It really gives me the creeps now.
