Blog Battles: What is good etiquette?

Recently a friend posted a blog entry about how he thinks Facebook is bad. He gave very good reasons as to why he doesn't like it (1. it hurts our ability to communicate, 2. it's addicting, 3. it turns personal into publicity, 4. it destroys concepts of personal accountability, and 5. it can destroy relationships and families). Though I don't necessarily agree with all the points, his opinion is valid. And I think someone can have and post any opinion on their blog that they want to.

But sadly, he and his wife got quite a bit of flaque over it. What I want to know is what is the point of a blog? What is good etiquette when posting? One opinion is that people shouldn't post things that would cause conflict, only post happy things. I don't necessarily agree. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and if they feel so inclined to post about it, then there's nothing wrong with that because blogs are personal. There's even room for a little debate, just keep your feelings out of it.

What do you think? What is good blogging etiquette when it comes to posting your opinions on controversial stuff?

I guess my personal opinion is that I have a blog for the purpose of recording things...We love going back and remembering what happened and in relation to everything around it, and having pictures. Basically my journal...but I am aware that we are not the only ones reading it, so it is mostly suitable for everyone. But maybe if I didn't have Zach to fill my posts I would write more about stuff going on...as is, I just don't care enough. Seems like there are so many hot topics today and so many opinions, so I personally want my blog to reflect my life somewhat and those topics aren't really in my life. If they are, I will blog about them :) I think people should write for themselves though...happy or opinionated. People don't have to read if they don't want.

I have been good about not posting things I might get 'in trouble' for. Or more to the point: that my in-law relations might scoff and scorn at me while reading it.
Also, I'm afraid to let people know I disagree with them on their blog, because I figure it's THEIR blog, you know?
oh, and I agree about Facebook...at least mostly. I got rid of my account.

Opinions are great. I think they should be respectful and not hateful or mean, but no one should be afraid to post an opinion, especially if they are passionate about it. And it is totally OK to disagree with someone. That is what makes life fun.

So I clicked on a link on the McCunes' blog, not even knowing it was you guys! That's funny. I'm glad I found you :)

That's an interesting point that you bring up-- I guess different people have different reasons for blogging. Sometimes I want to share my personal or political opinion about something, but I end up with hurt feelings when someone comments in a hurtful way about my post....

I have also known people to politely disagree with me on my blog, and I like that. It leaves room for discussion. I think as long as you do it in a courteous way, blogging debates/discussions can be fun!
