This Past Month: Mmm, Donuts!

Since Mariah love donuts already (notice the chocolate Hitler 'stache in this picture??), Brian and I decided to make homemade donuts. From scratch!

It was fairly easy to make up something for the dough. I just used the same recipe as the navajo tacos/elephant ears that I posted back in March 2010.

Dough:
-7/8 cup water
-1 large egg
-3 1/4 cup bread flour
-1/4 cup sugar
-1 tsp salt
-3 Tbsp dry milk
-1/4 cup butter
2 tsp rapid rise yeast

1. Add ingredients (in the order written) to bread machine, making a well for the yeast in the middle of the flour. Set course for "quick dough."
2. When dough is finished, seperate into 24 equal balls of dough. Flatten each ball slightly and cut out hole in middle with a cutter (be creative! we used the end of a turkey baster).  Allow to rise 30 minutes to an hour or until doubles (as shown).

3. Fry dough in Crisco, turning once (they burn easily!). Using a wooden skewer helps maneuver the donuts in the grease.

4. Immediately dip in glaze of choice (we found a few good ones off cooks.com).

5. You can also make the donut holes (using the batter you cut out of the middle).

6. Apply sprinkles liberally.

These were SOOO amazing. Brian and I got tummy aches for eating so many! Enjoy :)
